Many years ago, when I was in high school, I had an opportunity to go into a salt mine. There are several of them in the New York area. As we went down in the mine (I do not remember how far down) you could tell that many things were different than when we were on the surface. But the biggest difference was the light. After we had traveled some distance into the mine, the guide stopped the vehicle we were traveling on and asked everyone to turn off our head lamps. One by one we did (there was about 25 of us). It did not seem to matter how many lights were turned off you could still see pretty good, but finally the guide turned their light off, and you could not even see you own hand in front of your face. It was pitch dark, the true absence of all light. There was not a speck of light coming in from anywhere to help us see or even get our bearings.
In this section of the Psalm today, we find the Psalmist reminding us the Word of God is the only Light in the dark world to help us along the path of life. He says in verse 105, “Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” In other words, the Word of God lets us see where we are at this very moment and it also shows us where we are headed down the road. As we keep God’s Word in our hearts and minds, we will be revived by God’s Word when difficult times come, when life seems hard, we know God’s Word will give us the light we need to keep moving. It is important we never forget God’s Word, His Instructions for our life. Because when those around us want to trap us or cause us harm we can always go back to His Word and be reassured of His promises and find comfort and hope in them. We also will never lose our way or stray off the path because His Word is our light our lamp to guide us in the darkness. God’s Word should be joyful for us, something we cherish and want to pass down to others. We can only do that if we are following it ourselves. As the Psalmist says, “I am resolved to obey Your statutes to the very end.” Are your resolved or determined to obey God’s Word to the very end? Application
Our Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for this wonderful day, Lord help me to apply Your Word to my heart, mind and soul. Lord let Your Word be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Lord help me find the opportunities to share Your Word with someone this week. Use me as You see fit right where I am at. Lord help me to obey Your Word everyday so I may be the servant You have called me to be. All this I pray in Jesus Christ Name, Amen.
